(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 14 – It is “essential” that institutions adopt “urgent interventions in order to implement pediatric vaccination coverage, in particular the recommended ones, which represent an essential cornerstone for the prevention of infectious diseases”. This is stated by the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (Sites) which, in the new document ‘Practical indications on the subject of pediatric vaccinations’, underlines how co-administration and active calling represent the two main operational methods that allow to improve vaccination coverage and optimize the vaccination calendar.
The introduction of the obligation, explains Siti, “has made it possible to obtain a significant increase in coverage for compulsory vaccinations relatively quickly, while for the recommended ones they are still far from reaching the levels established by the Ministry of Health”.
Hygienists therefore consider it essential to adopt some urgent interventions: strengthen the surveillance system and guarantee the availability of an effective vaccination registry; consider that the co-administration of pediatric vaccines does not require special precautions, but normal good vaccination practice; promote the co-administration of pediatric vaccines as an expansion of the vaccination offer, a practice that guarantees the freeing up of resources in vaccination centers, the reduction of child discomfort and inconvenience for parents; promote and implement the active call.
“The absence or low impact of many vaccine-preventable diseases is linked to the achievement and maintenance of high vaccination coverage, which is therefore fundamental, as reiterated by the new National Vaccine Prevention Plan – declares Giovanni Gabutti, Coordinator of the Group ‘ Vaccines and vaccination policies’ of the Sites -. There is a need to improve the vaccination offer and Public Health has the task of indicating ways to increase coverage and optimize the vaccination calendar. Co-administration and active calling – he concludes – are have been identified, also at an international level, as the two main operating methods that allow the achievement of these objectives”.
