  • In Mexico it is estimated that one in three adults have hypertension and at the same time one in three patients with the condition is unaware that they have it.
  • Men are the most affected with 55.3%, while 44% of those affected are women.
  • This condition is the main risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Hypertension and diabetes are among the most frequent diseases in our country. Many times both go hand in hand and the main risk is that there is no cure, only treatment. In the same way, both increase the risk of developing complications in the heart, kidneys, eyes, feet and others.

With this in mind, there are two very important aspects that need to be addressed. On the one hand, there is prevention to avoid developing any of the pathologies. At the same time, it also requires education campaigns for those who already have any of the conditions and achieve adequate control.

The importance of health education

During the 1st course “Hypertension and diabetes, learn why they are not our enemies”diabetes educators from the Mexican Diabetes Federation, AC assured that the lack of education about the condition represents a significant risk of inadequate management of both conditions.

During his participation the Dr. Alan Omar Vazquez Alvarez, a diabetes educator with a doctorate in pharmacology, explained that high blood pressure is the leading cause of death in the world. Of the total adult world population in Mexico, 49.4% live with hypertension, men being the most affected with 55.3%, while 44% of those affected are women.

The pharmacology expert added that the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes is an important area to address, since people living with type 2 diabetes have more than twice the risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those without diabetes.

For his part, Dr. Josafat E. Camacho Arellano, Medical President of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Federation of Diabetes, AC and Diabetes Educator, mentioned that “arterial hypertension is a chronic condition in which the pressure with which the heart pumps blood to the arteries increases so that it circulates throughout the body. We speak of hypertension when the blood pressure in our blood vessels is greater than 140/90 mmHg.

Most patients are unaware of their health condition

According to Dr. Camacho, most people who have AHT do not know it because they do not have any symptoms, but there are those who may present intense headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, sensation of seeing lights, blurred vision, pain in swollen chest and/or lower back and ankles.

The FMD Medical President revealed that according to the rule of thirds “1 in 3 adults has hypertension; 1 in 3 adults who have hypertension are unaware they have it; 1 in 3 adults who take treatment for hypertension fail to keep their blood pressure under control.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health (SSa) reveal that in Mexico approximately more than 30 million people have arterial hypertension, as it is the main risk factor for causing cardiovascular diseases (especially coronary disease and cerebrovascular disease), but also for chronic kidney disease, heart failure and dementia .

The prevalence of diabetes in Mexico is 10.6% (11.6% in women and 9.4% in men) according to figures from the Atlas 2021 of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). On the other hand, it is estimated that 1 in 9 people in the world will have diabetes in 2030, which will make it more difficult for health professionals to offer individualized and appropriate care for each patient.
