“Hypertension in Saxony-Anhalt: High Blood Pressure Cases and Deaths in 2021”

Hall. StatLa. In 2021, 5,352 women and 2,521 men in Saxony-Anhalt were treated in hospitals for hypertension (high blood pressure). While among those under 50 it was mostly men (56.3%) who had to be hospitalized, among those over 50 it was women (70.7%). With increasing age, the number of treatment cases increased sharply after the age of 50. While most hospitalized hypertensive patients were aged between 60 and 70 years (615), most female hypertensive patients were between 80 and 90 years old (1581).

As reported by the State Statistical Office on the occasion of World Hypertension Day on May 17, residents of Saxony-Anhalt are particularly affected by high blood pressure diseases. 484 inhabitants per 100,000 of the population of Saxony-Anhalt had to be treated in 2021 with this diagnosis in a clinic. In relation to both sexes, there were 362 patients per 100,000 inhabitants of the state, Saarland followed with 335 in second place. In contrast, only 85 patients per 100,000 inhabitants were treated in Berlin and 96 in Hamburg.

2,481 Saxony-Anhalt residents died in 2021 as a result of their high blood pressure. 1/3 of the deceased (844) with this cause of death were men. Almost 4 out of 10 of those who died (925) were 90 years or older, compared to only 3 women and 7 men under the age of 50. Most deaths from hypertension were in the 80s to 80s age group
counted under 90-year-olds (1,148).

In terms of causes of death due to high blood pressure in 2021, based on the respective population, Saxony-Anhalt (114 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) took the penultimate place behind the Free State of Saxony (116). Very few died from it in Hamburg (29 per 100,000 inhabitants).
