Tech experts at Hyundai Mobis plan to soon turn the windshield into a kind of projection screen to replace screens in vehicles. A subsidiary of the Korean manufacturer has announced that it is teaming up with German optics giant Zeiss to develop a holographic windshield display.
While current head-up displays mostly show relatively simple information like speed and navigation, the system the two companies are working on will include menus, entertainment, audio controls, video and even games. In the interior of future cars, there is no infotainment screen at all. Now it’s all on the windshield.
Mobis and Zeiss say an ultra-thin, transparent film that can display holograms is glued to the windshield. The two companies emphasize that the screens will not be in the way, but will be transparent and designed not to distract the driver. What the driver will be able to see is different from what the passenger will observe, so that the latter can watch movies or enjoy games.
Mobis and Zeiss say they are developing the system for installation in production models as early as 2027 and that prototype demonstrations are already underway.
