President Gustavo Petro was out of his element during the inauguration of the new Ombudsman, Iris Marín, in Nuquí, Chocó.

The president confessed that his absence at an important meeting with the Supreme Court of Justice was not due to lack of interest, but because of a deep personal pain: the departure of his last daughter (Antonella) from the country.

Petro said: “My daughter decided to leave. She is the last one I had. I am really sad. Empty. However, I wanted to come because of the commitment to swear you in, Ombudsman, here in Chocó. It means a lot. I had a speech prepared yesterday before the Supreme Court of Justice. It was nice.”.

Despite his sadness, Petro fulfilled his commitment to appoint Marín, who will take over from Julio Luis Balanta Mina..

“I have to live these two days in the midst of my mourning because my last daughter is leaving. I failed to perform public acts, but I did not have the strength to stand before an audience and speak when my heart was crying. My daughter has suffered psychological persecution,” added Petro.

In her acceptance speech, the new Ombudsman promised to lead an institution with a diverse management team, mostly made up of women with training in human rights, who will work independently and with a vocation for service.

“I promise that the Ombudsman’s Office will be led by a management team with experience and training in human rights, diverse and mostly made up of women who carry out their work independently of sectors of power, who are incorruptible and who have a vocation for service to the community,” said the official.
