Bangladesh team captain Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu has got the responsibility of chief selector. Hannan Sarkar has joined the same panel. The contracts of Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar Sumon were not renewed. Abdur Razzak of Nannur panel is also retained in the new panel.
The new selection panel led by Lipu was finalized in the ninth board meeting of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday. But the Vice Chairman of Cricket Operations Committee Khaled Mahmud Sujan raised questions about the appointment of the selection committee under BCB Cricket Operations.
‘I made it clear, I don’t know anything. Of course (shocking)… I’m the vice-chairman of cricket operations, I don’t know who’s taking the selectors. Is it surprising that I don’t know? I don’t even know what I really need from this institution.’
Sujan gave this response to the media at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on Tuesday (January 13). He is working as the coach of the great Dhaka in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Apart from being the vice chairman of cricket operations of BCB, this director is also serving as the chairman of game development.
After June 2016 BCB changed the selection panel of the national team. Nandu’s term ended on December 31. They are then asked to perform their duty till further decision. Meanwhile, Khaled Mahmud is expecting good things as Lipu is the selector, but he cannot accept his coming to the selection committee.
‘Lipu Bhai’s cricket talent…many seniors have been following Bangladeshi cricket for a long time. He was the captain of the national team. He was the director of the cricket board. There can be no question about his sanity. Of course I think he could be very good at coming. But I have not heard his name before who can be a selector. A very surprising announcement has come from BCB. I wasn’t there, so I can’t really say.’
“It is not normal to question the cricket knowledge of someone who has played cricket. Captained Bangladesh Cricket. He was intimately involved for so many years. Sometimes he has a break. Many of us can talk about watching international cricket on TV. But what is happening in domestic cricket, what is happening in Premier League or age-based cricket or other places… but I don’t think it will be too difficult for him’ – added this BCB director.
Khaled Mahmud praised the recent former Nannu-Bashar, ‘Nannu bhai, Bangladesh team has achieved a lot under Suman. Their contribution should not be forgotten. Change was needed, BCB’s decision… Nannu brothers have done a great job as far as they have done. I do not blame, rather salute. The work they have done with patience. Selection is not an easy task, you cannot please everyone. Taking 15 people from so many people, again there are likes and dislikes. It was not easy to work between them.’
