The 88-year-old actress suffers from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative eye disease, which she was diagnosed with in 2012 and her vision has worsened lately, yet she has no plans to quit acting

Having to depend on other people to teach her lines “is awful,” but with her vision deteriorating, Judi Dench knows she can’t help it. «I can’t see anything on the set anymore – admitted the actress, Oscar winner for «Shakespeare in Love», talking to the Daily Mirror’s Notebook -. And I can’t read the scripts. But you just have to get used to it. It’s complicated if I have somewhere long. I still haven’t found a way: I have a lot of friends who can tell me the script, but I’ve always had a photographic memory».

Considered among the best actresses of her generation, as well as the fourth (along with Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett and Geraldine Page) with the most Oscar nominations – a good eight, the last of which was in 2021 for «Belfast» – in 2012 Dench revealed that she suffered from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative eye disease that forced her to stop driving seven years later, affecting her deeply.

Yet despite all the difficulties experienced in the last decade, the 88-year-old James Bond star – unforgettable his appearances in the role of M from 1995’s GoldenEye to the 2015 Specter saga – has no intention of giving up acting. “Losing my sight is the most terrible of shocks, but I want to work as much as possible,” concluded Dench, who last July 8 has received the IFTA Irish Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in Dublin.
