Detoxification is essential for refreshing the activity of the body’s systems. The organ responsible for neutralizing and eliminating 75% of toxins is the liver: every minute it filters close to two liters of blood. Every day he secretes a liter and a half of bile juices into the intestine.

Exposure to polluted air, a diet low in antioxidants, multiple medications and drinking alcohol, along with a lifestyle full of stress and full of events that are difficult for the soul to contain, all of these raise the toxicity threshold of the liver, make it difficult to sort, filter and clear it and lead to various pathologies. Chinese medicine defines the condition as “liver qi eruptions” caused by a lifestyle laden with both metabolic and emotional toxins.

Juices, honey and rice

There are various methods for detoxification, starting with drinking only juices, eating a teaspoon of honey 3 times a day for 10 days, or the well-known rice diet.

Due to the processes that take place in the body during cleansing, you can initially see what are known as “recovery crises” or “cleansing effects”, which manifest in general weakness, discomfort in the digestive system, dizziness and especially headaches. All of these are the body’s reactions to the release of toxins from the cells and the cleaning systems into the bloodstream.

80 percent of the diseases that afflict the body originate from inflammations caused by the accumulation of various toxins. The contribution of detoxification is not only in healing the body and preventing diseases as a result, but also in imparting dietary changes and a healthy lifestyle.

The purpose of the cleanse is to create for three weeks a kind of mind-body workshop that includes a diet free of toxins and easy to digest. The goal is to allow maximum removal of toxins from the liver through the urinary and bile duct removal systems.

The first week will be based on whole rice or basmati rice as the center of the food.

In the second week we will add a number of green vegetables (fennel, chard, rocket, parsley rashed), which are known as detoxifiers.

In the third week we will combine rice and baked vegetables alongside two fish dishes.

In the fourth week, a gentle return to a healthy naturopathic diet begins.

A herbal formula that includes plants such as milk thistle, dandelion root and nettle will accompany the cleansing procedure. The three plants are bitter, cooling and eliminate heat and toxicity. The seeds of the milk thistle are rich in antioxidants, therefore they help in liver rehabilitation in cases of fatty liver.

Along with the plants that accompany the cleaning process, you can also combine herbs such as lemon sage and chamomile, which will support the digestive system and the nervous system, since part of the side effects of the cleaning process is fatigue or great irritability. The liver frees itself to know on the energetic and mental level, therefore it is important to be at rest and listen to the body from the moment the process begins.

There are several methods of detoxification. With each method, the patient’s health, nutritional and mental status must be taken into account and the cleaning adjusted accordingly. It is important that it be moderate and balanced.

During the cleanse, completely avoid dairy products, products containing gluten, animal products (chicken, fish, eggs) and spices, including salt, caffeine, alcohol and hot spices such as pepper.

Lots of spices that have an effect on the liver such as turmeric, coriander seeds, star anise and rosemary.

An important part of the cleansing procedure is fluid consumption: drink between 10-12 glasses of water a day, in addition to drinking herbal tea.

The food during the period was prepared by baking, steaming or cooking.

Make sure to chew the food slowly and for a long time for maximum digestion.

Divide the food over at least 6 small meals.

The last meal was finished by 7 pm.

After the cleansing period, when you return to a normal diet, it is of great importance to preserve some of the nutritional changes that began during it, in order to create a continuum of a healthy lifestyle until next spring, and so God forbid it repeats just like the seasons.

Tea to cleanse the liver

½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger root, ½ teaspoon fenugreek seeds, ½ teaspoon grated turmeric root

1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2-3 leaves of spicy mint, 2 tablespoons of water + 1 large cup of water.

Boil everything together in a cauldron, filter and drink for health. (recommended for two 2-3 cups of tea)

If the liver is not prepared to deal with a massive release of toxins, the toxins may sink into the new tissues and then – without proper preparation – the cleansing may be harmful.

Since the methods are many and varied, and since not every one of them is suitable for everyone, it is good to be adjusted and accompanied by a qualified naturopath or herbalist. During the cleansing period, it is advisable to take a break from the daily routine. I wish he had it on us.
