It was confirmed that one cup of smoothie sold commercially contains an average of sugar equivalent to 17 sugar cubes.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 8th the results of an analysis of 93 types of smoothies from small and medium-sized coffee and beverage shops where nutritional information was difficult to verify between April and June.

According to the researchers, the average sugar content in one cup of smoothie was 52.2g, equivalent to 17 sugar cubes. Based on the Korean nutrient intake standards, drinking just one cup is more than half of the daily recommended intake.

The Korean Nutrient Intake Standards limit total sugar intake to 10–20% of total daily energy intake (50–100 g based on 2,000 kcal), and it is suggested that intake of added sugar added during cooking and processing of food should not exceed 10% of total daily energy intake.

Among the smoothies studied, the one with the highest sugar content was 94.6 grams per cup, which means that just one serving could bring you close to your daily sugar intake.

The researchers also analyzed how much sugar content was reduced when customers requested to adjust the sweetness level when ordering a drink.

The sweetness level was investigated by dividing it into three stages: ‘original sweetness’, ‘less sweet’, and ‘half sweet’. As a result, the sugar content was reduced by an average of 15% in the case of ‘less sweet’, and by an average of 40% in the case of ‘half sweet’.

Park Joo-sung, the director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Health and Environment Research Institute, said, “In order to reduce sugar intake from high-sugar drinks such as smoothies, we need a consumption environment that allows for ‘less sweet’ choices,” adding, “We will continue to research and provide diverse nutritional information in the future.”

Sugar enters our body and is converted to glucose, then combines with proteins or fat molecules to cause ‘glycation’. Glycation causes inflammation in our body and oxidizes tissues. Cell damage caused by glycation also weakens collagen in blood vessel walls, causing high blood pressure, strokes, aneurysms, age spots, and wrinkled skin. Glycation also contributes to the formation of plaques in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In addition, it can cause problems such as decreased libido, joint pain, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
