Grigor Dimitrov assured again that at the moment he is not even thinking about the end of his career.
The best Bulgarian tennis player of all time spoke to Cindy Schmerler from the New York Times.
“Grigor is experiencing his renaissance while many of his contemporaries are considering the end of their careers,” wrote the most influential American newspaper.
The allusion is obviously also to the just officially retired Dominic Thiem, who is from Dimitrov’s generation.
“When you’ve been competing for so many years, you don’t think at all about your motivation at the end of the season,” commented Grigor.
This week he will play in the last tournament of the year in the “Masters 1000” category in Paris, where in the second round he awaits the winner of the match between Zhang Zhizhen (Kit) and Thomas Martin Echeverri (Arge). Last year in the French capital, the former No. 3 in the world reached the final, where he lost to the record holder of “Grand Slam” titles, Novak Djokovic (Sir).
The tournament in Paris is Dimitrov’s last chance to secure a place in the ATP Finals in Turin next month. Grigor became champion in London in 2017.
“It doesn’t matter if participating in Paris will help me qualify. I know that it’s good to end the season in a proper way – the way I would like it,” says Dimitrov.
He also gave an interview to Eurosport, in which he did not miss the topic of the end of his career.
“It’s sad when you see players retire who you grew up with and who for so many years made you better. At such a moment, I can’t help but think about my life after tennis. I will continue to fight and do everything in my power to stay at the highest level”, says Grigor.
