“After the fire incident, I try not to park near electric cars.”

Mr. Kim (27), a resident who was met at the underground parking lot of an apartment in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the 13th, said, “I feel uneasy because the electric vehicle charging station is underground and there are no fire extinguishers around.” There are three electric vehicle charging facilities in this apartment, but there are no fire extinguishers.

On this day, the Dong-A Ilbo reporting team visited 10 apartments in Seoul in the wake of the electric car fire incident in Cheongna, Incheon. As a result, 9 of them did not have fire extinguishing facilities for electric car fires. In another apartment in Seodaemun-gu that the reporter visited, an outdoor air conditioner unit was placed right next to an electric car charger. A resident, Mr. Choi (28), said, “It’s hot even outside, so I’m worried that the fire might spread while charging the electric car.” In the underground parking lot of an apartment in Jung-gu, Seoul, a trash separation bin was placed near an electric car charging facility. If a fire broke out, there was a high possibility that the trash would catch fire. An official from an autonomous district in Seoul explained, “Since we don’t have the authority to crack down, we can’t do anything other than sending out official documents to apartments to encourage them to park above ground.”

After the fire, Seocho-gu, Seoul, began inspecting electric vehicle charging stations. On the 12th, while accompanying the inspection of the district’s electric vehicle charging stations at the Banpo Bokgaecheon Public Parking Lot in Seocho-gu, an expert inspected the charging stations focusing on five fire risk factors: voltage, current, electric lines, charger terminals, and leakage current. Since fire risk factors cannot be identified with the naked eye, equipment such as meters and thermal imaging cameras were mobilized. Kim Deok-gi (66), the head of the inspection company, emphasized again, “There should be no flammable objects around electric vehicle facilities, and it is recommended to always have a fire extinguisher.” Lee Young-joo, a professor at Kyungil University’s Department of Fire and Disaster Prevention, pointed out, “Fire safety managers need to be aware of fire risk factors and manage them closely.”
