Interviewed by the “Los Angeles Times”, the star of “ET” said, among other things, that after breaking up with her third husband Will Kopelman, father of her daughters, she entered a self-destructive spiral and the only refuge was the bottle
After her divorce from third husband Will Kopelman, father of her two daughters Olive and Frankie (10 and 8 years old respectively), Drew Barrymore entered a self-destructive spiral and drank so much that she had to seek help from therapist Barry Michels. However, when he realized he couldn’t handle the actress’ severe bottle addiction, she dumped her as a patient. «She told me“ I can’t do it anymore ”and she was referring to my drinking problem – Barrymore told the Los Angeles Times-. I replied to him “I understand and I have never respected you more. I’m not getting better and I hope one day I can regain your trust.” It took two years for this to happen and in the meantime even the same friends of the «ET» star were very worried about her health.
One above all, Cameron Diaz, who however has always supported her. “I knew that if we all stayed with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way – explained Diaz in the same interview -. I have absolute faith in her, you can’t even imagine how difficult it was to be her as a child.” The turning point came in 2019, thanks to the «Drew Barrymore Show»: after recording the first episode, Barrymore decided to stop drinking and so she did. “I think the opportunity to do a show like this really shook me up. I said to myself “I can’t do this unless I’m sober”.
She has since resumed her professional relationship with Michels and while she’s still struggling “with a lot of things,” including how and when to tell her daughters about her turbulent drug and alcohol addiction past, the actress is confident about her future. «I realized that only with me and with my daughters am I really happy she-concluded she-she. I always thought I’d be on the hamster wheel for life, but maybe there will be something else before the lights go out.” Before her four years with Kopelman (they were married from 2012 to 2016), Barrymore had two lightning marriages to Jeremy Thomas (1994-1995) and Tom Green (2001-2002).
