INTERVIEW – President of the jury for the Erwan-Bergot prize, the Chief of Staff of the Army discusses the relationship between the army and literature.
General Pierre Schill, Chief of Staff of the Army, chairs the jury
the Erwan-Bergot prize, which rewards a literary work celebrating an example of commitment to the service of France. This year, the winner is Marie-Laure Buisson for women fighters (City Press).
LE FIGARO. – Are writers, literature, good spokespersons for armies?
General Schill. – It is difficult to answer in absolute terms. Some writers lead one to reflect on the meaning of military engagement. But being a spokesperson would mean carrying a military thought that would exist in a formalized way, I don’t think it’s a reality. The singularity of a soldier lies in the fact of being ready to kill at the cost of risking his own life. The writers offer a reflection on war and the approach to the reality of combat: courage, heroism, honor and brotherhood in arms, but also fear, suffering, horror and sometimes madness .
