Mathieu van der Poel’s race on Sunday in Glasgow was decidedly eventful. Before finding himself on the ground 16 km from the finish after a fall in a bend, the Dutchman took a rather unusual pee break during the interruption of the race, for almost an hour due to a demonstration, at the World Road Cycling Championships.

“I walked into a house. The interruption lasted long enough and I had to go to the bathroom. I don’t think I was the only one either. So thank you to the people who welcomed us, ”said the Dutchman at a press conference.

The race stopped by environmental activists

The men’s road race, queen event of the World Cycling Championships, was stopped for almost an hour by environmental activists on Sunday morning after 79 kilometers of racing, before being able to start again. Scottish police have announced that they have evacuated and arrested five people. The environmental group ‘This is Rigged’, which calls for a halt to hydrocarbon exploration in the UK, claimed responsibility for the action.

After a recital, Mathieu van der Poel wins a rainbow jersey for the first time on the road ahead of his Belgian rival Wout van Aert, who came second 1′37″ behind.
