As clinical as it is merciless, the French comic The Killer impressed David Fincher so much that the director of Seven and Fight Club adapted it for Netflix. While waiting for the next release of the film, the comic’s screenwriter, Matz, talks to us about his love for funk and jazz, a relative rarity in the ninth art where rockers abound.

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

La Vie La Té Raid, a 45 by the Gramacks (1978), a Dominican group very popular in Martinique where I spent my childhood. They had a great singer, Jeff Joseph. This song has a social side with very festive rhythms.

What is your favorite way to listen to music?

Vinyls! I remained loyal to them. I also buy certain albums on CD to save my vinyls.

What was the last record you bought?

I was in Spain for a comic book convention. I found a Dizzy Gillespie with Arturo Sandoval, a Lalo Schifrin with George Benson and a Branford Marsalis that I didn’t have.

Or do you prefer to listen to music?

At home while working or in the car. While working, I mainly listen to funk. I’m a fan of funk and jazz, for me it’s a bit the same thing. I work with music that I already know. If I listened to music I didn’t know, my mind would be more interested in music than work!

Is there a song that you are ashamed to listen to with pleasure?

There are not any. You shouldn’t be ashamed!

What is the record that everyone loves and you hate?

I don’t hate any particular records but artists like Queen or Johnny Hallyday!

Which disk to survive on a desert island?

There are plenty ! I would say a Cameo or a Harry James.

Which cover would you frame at home?

There are a lot of them, especially in jazz but also in funk in a more charged genre. I would say Angel from the Ohio Players.

Do you prefer music on record or in concert?

I really like both even if I sometimes struggle with live records. At the Bataclan, I saw Joe Sample, a pianist I adore. In concert, it was extraordinary. I was good friends with Leon Ware who produced Marvin Gaye’s album I Want You. In concert, he was fantastic!

What song would you like played at your funeral?

A good Cameo without doubt!

What disk do you share with the person you live with?

My wife is allergic to funk but there is one exception: Let’s Stay Together by Al Green.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?

That of The Hot Spot with John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis and Taj Mahal. And that of Once Upon a Time in the West.

Which group would you have liked to be part of?

Cameo! Or maybe Maze, they’re even cooler.

A song that always makes you cry?

Timin’ de Maze.

A song that makes you mad?

Mad with rage, it’s strong… We Are the Champions by Queen. One of my sons likes Queen. Every time, I make fun of him by telling him that it sucks! Luckily, he has very eclectic tastes and loves Cameo!

The Matz Killer and Luc Jacamon (Ed. Casterman). The Killer by David Fincher. On Netflix from November 10.
