“I have never regretted that I was able to lead a double life”

by time news

Munich“The film that blew up the Berlinale!” Was the advertising slogan for “ok” in 1970, probably the first German anti-Vietnam War film. The director Michael Verhoeven doesn’t like this slogan at all and remembers only too well why the Berlinale was actually canceled for the first and only time in its history 51 years ago.

For decades, the controversial scandal film was no longer seen after a true incident in Vietnam. On March 19th, “ok” will finally be released on DVD. A special pleasure for Verhoeven because he had to fight for this film so much. At 82, the born-and-bred Berliner looks back once more, tells of his double life as a doctor and filmmaker and of his first kiss with Senta Berger, 79, with whom he has been married since 1966 (!). (Their two sons Luca and Simon are also active in the film business today.) Verhoeven suffered a severe blow in October last year: he contracted the corona virus while on the train and has still not completely recovered from it. But let’s first talk about the film that made it internationally famous.
