Mónica Palencia, Minister of the Interior and close collaborator of the President of the Republic, Daniel Noboa, assured on the morning of Wednesday, July 23, 2024, that she does not fear the impeachment against her, promoted by the Citizen Revolution movement (RC5).

The trial is based on allegations of dereliction of duty, insecurity and the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas.

In an interview with Radio Centro, the Minister of the Interior expressed her lack of respect towards the majority of the assembly members, indicating that her attitude towards the legislative body has changed significantly.

“The most serious thing is that I am going to go to an Assembly for which, in its great majority, I no longer feel any respect,” he commented..

The minister criticised the withdrawal of signatures by several legislators to speed up the trials against her and Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld, and warned that the government will take action in response to this decision.

Support for the trial against Palencia comes from the Citizen Revolution and Construye factions, while the Social Christian Party (PSC) has not yet taken an official position. The ruling National Democratic Agreement (ADN) bloc opposes the trial.

Currently, there are 62 votes in favour of the dismissal and censure of the minister, but the Plenary of the Assembly will need at least 92 votes to proceed with the dismissal.
