The PTO European Open of Ibiza in a novel distance of 2 kilometers of swimming, 80 kilometers of cycling and 18 kilometers of running that took place last Saturday seemed like a competition destined for victory to be played between Jan Frondeo, Kristian Blummenfelt and Alistair Brownlee, but an Australian triathlete of only 27 years of age unexpectedly appeared, breaking all the forecasts.

The surprising winner was proud to surpass several of his childhood idols: “I never expected to win here, I surprised myself. It’s historic to win against these stars I will probably never have that opportunity again and I think that’s what made it even more emotional this win. I grew up watching these guys, I used to go to the school library where they had triathlon magazines and I followed Brownlee and Frodeno. I got into the sport because of them and competing with them here is very special and that makes me It was very emotional. They made the sport what it is today and I think we owe them and have a lot to thank those guys for.”

“Many would laugh if they saw it as work”

Max Neumann prevailed over the established world stars with an exhibition in all three sectors. After finishing the test, the oceanic triathlete surprised when referring to the training methods of his rivals compared to his way of understanding the work to get in shape: “I have shown that you can beat Blummenfelt without using so much shitty science, just a measure of power, a lot of hard work and a masseuse”.

The Australian triathlete defends his simple training method: “Many would laugh if they saw it as work. It’s literally an almost family project with me, my brother, my girlfriend and a masseuse. There’s no more… No stupid science, just a meter of power, very hard work and being smart. It’s just going back to the basics, no crap, just the basics. No, really.”

Neumann points out how he radically changed his way of training since 2020: “It was during Covid when I started working with my brother. It was a bit of a difficult time in Australia, I left my previous coach and my brother just said: let’s try it. It has been hard to connect with him but now we understand each other very well, our family is very close and if there is anyone who knows me it is my brother. I see him most days of the week, we talk all the time and I think that having a A very close relationship like that is really key in this sport.”

“There is no science in what I do”

The Australian triathlete emphasizes that nothing complicated is needed to perform at a high level: “There is nothing science in what I do. We are a very simple organization, if someone saw how we do things they would probably laugh at us, we always say that we are the most unprofessional professionals out there, but now it seems to be working.”

Neumann is clear that it is not necessary to complicate the way you train: “Keep it simple, have fun, don’t take yourself too seriously and just enjoy the sport and enjoy the training, without science, that’s the key for me.”
