Very seriously injured in an accident with a horse at the end of May, Sergio Rico has not become a footballer again, far from it, but his progress is encouraging. For the Champions League match PSG – Newcastle (1-1), he reappeared at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday November 28.
He is actively continuing his convalescence in Seville and gave an interview to the radio show “El Partidazo de COPE”.
“I’m getting a little better every day but I’m not yet 100% medically,” he said. I’m staying in Seville so I don’t have to fly every time I need to take exams here. I lost almost 20 kilos after the accident. I weighed around 91-92 kilos. I went down to 73. But now I’m back up to 88 kilos. I saw the photos when I left the hospital, I looked like a toothpick…”
On May 28, Rico was admitted to the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville for head trauma following an accident with a horse during a pilgrimage in southern Spain. After several days in a coma, he was able to leave the intensive care unit on July 5, before leaving the hospital on August 18.
“I don’t remember anything at all… In the end, I was the one who suffered the least”
At this stage, PSG’s number 2 goalkeeper does not know when he will be able to play football again. “I constantly write to my doctor to find out when he will let me return to sport,” says the Sevillian who has not played in an official match since January 2022 and whose contract with the capital club expires in June 2024. J I can’t wait to get back into my routine, to feel like a footballer. But it’s not in my hands. I follow the orders of the doctors who took care of me and who saved my life. I can’t wait for them to give me a little more freedom because I feel good. I sleep wonderfully, like a baby! »
On Spanish radio, Rico also confided that he had forgotten everything about the accident: “I even went back to where it happened to try to reactivate memories but I don’t remember anything at all… In the end, I am the one who suffered the least. I didn’t realize anything. When I woke up, my wife and my mother were there. The doctor asked me if I recognized my wife and I told him yes. »
