On the next 20 and 21 June a new edition of the International Dance Festival of Italica in the Roman theater of Itálica (Santiponce, province of Seville) with OLA!: Inex then/ Entredos/ Impasse Take off Dance/Johan Igner.

In November 2022 I had the pleasure of chatting with Carolina Armenta and Johan Ingerwho respectively hold the positions of rehearsal director and artistic director of the program Take off Dance (San Juan de Aznalfarache, province of Seville). These professionals introduced me to the philosophy behind this educational program in high performance contemporary dance and neoclassical dance. In such a way, that they have a teaching team that introduces students to the repertoire of top-level companies, as well as to various dance languages to prepare versatile dancers who are willing to succeed in the auditions to which they decide to apply.

Now, both Johan Inger and Carolina are two professionals who have worked in different roles in several of the most prestigious companies in Europe. With this experience and knowledge, they have undertaken this project together with Funddatec It has been in operation for less than a year. Soon after, they have managed to enter the program of this year’s Italica Dance Festival. Of course, this is a warning that what has been cultivated for many years in the province of Seville.

Without further ado, I give way to the synopsis of the pieces that will make up this Sample of the end of the 2023-2024 course of the Take off Dance programlikewise, of Video Mapping Italic:

THE VIDEO MAPPING ‘ITÁLICA, WHEN THE STONES DANCE’ WILL BE SHOWN AT THE ROMAN THEATER BEFORE EACH SHOW OF THE 2023 EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL

The audiovisual show, specially created for the 2023 International Dance Festival Itálica, will welcome its spectators just before each of the shows scheduled at the Teatro Romano

Once its thousand-year-old vocation as a scenic space has been recovered, the Roman Theater —the oldest civil work in the Italica Archaeological Complex— will be presented to us as a suggestive canvas on which to recreate the visual fantasy offered by the creative, artistic and technical techniques of this video mapping created and directed by José María Roca from Imperdible Artes Escénicas.

Nothing better than a natural scenery like the one represented by the theater façade to create a universe of surprise and visual impact that contributes to consolidating the value that the festival represents in the cultural calendar of our country. The Roman Theater will invite us to tell new stories with new contemporary technical resources that contrast with the tragic, comic and solemn antiquity that we imagine impregnated these stones.

At 10:30 p.m. before each show, through these projections the theater will also join the dance party making its stones dance to discover a new dimension and deepen the vocation of social space for the emotion that the festival offers its audience. In this way, the intervention in the monumental landscape will give new meaning to its heritage values, modifying the usual vision of this architectural reference.

The theater façade will provide us with its volume and morphology to introduce it into the world of the unreal with a visual spectacle that destroys and reconstructs, dresses and undresses, showing its imaginary interior to serve as an introduction to each and every one of the companies that the Itálica International Dance Festival offers us this year.

Programa triple de Take off Dance/Johan Igner:

I NEW THEN

A choreography inspired by the musical atmosphere of the nostalgic album Astral Weeks of Van Morrison. A retrospective look at a youthful era that was, at the same time, pure and simple, facing the different challenges that reaching maturity poses.
We confront this immersion in the past honestly, leaving behind superfluous and unnecessary gestures, movements and structures. We seek honesty and purity through an increasingly new and authentic look, meeting the
choreographic material always as if it were the first time.

“I wanted it to lead to freshness, clarity and color. I will never, ever get that old again.”
Van Morrison

IMPASSE

How can we reduce the gulf that increases when we remain stagnant? Our world today seems trapped in a situation where no progress seems possible anymore. Impasse points out that the origin of human behavior is rooted in the pressure exerted by others and the loss of one’s own essence. The problem is exacerbated by our ease of falling under the influence of what others say or do. Why not encourage our ability to reinvent ourselves and try to find the answers within ourselves? Impasse gives us a sense of urgency when it comes to acting and intervening in these changes. We discover that only together can we be stronger; and that alone, we are much less.
