When the minister announced this news publicly, the Head of the Government attended the morning session of the Seimas. So far, she said she has not received the minister’s request to resign.

“Look, there is no serfdom in the Government. We already talked about it with the minister probably a month ago, when the problems with intermediate settlements started. My urgent request to the minister was, however, to solve the practical problems that arise for a good process”, answered I. Šimonytė when asked how she intends to react to the minister’s public request to allow him to leave.

According to the prime minister, the process of mid-term examinations “is not in question”, it is also supported by the schoolchildren themselves, but technical problems have hindered them, which “struck a spoonful of tar into a fundamentally correct reform”.

The Prime Minister explained that after the first request to withdraw G. Jakšta had urged him to solve the problems that had arisen, and offered him the help of experts from the Government Chancellery.

“If it seems to the minister that he has already done everything he could, then, apparently, the situation will have to be evaluated in the same way,” emphasized I.Šimonytė.

When asked to specify whether she intends to accept G. Jakštas’ letter of resignation, the Prime Minister stated that she did not want to preempt events.

“I don’t have that request yet and I wouldn’t like it to be like with Minister Anušauskas,” said I.Šimonytė.

The head of the government said that she could not comment on the remarks made by the minister at the press conference, saying that the prime minister’s team hindered him more than helped him.

“I asked my team to help the minister and the minister himself wanted that help. As far as I know, there were discussions about the order in which the questions should be addressed. The minister did not indicate to me any of his disappointments or dissatisfactions or any different assessments. I really wouldn’t want to comment on comments that I don’t know where they come from,” she said.

Was the Prime Minister warned about another intention of G. Jakšto to submit a resignation request?

“See how to say here, the first time is enough. Once is enough. It is the first time that a minister sees a reason to submit a resignation request, and we have already discussed that situation. This is the job of a politician.

Maybe when you haven’t done the job before, it seems a little more convenient or easier than it really is. And so it happens that circumstances arise in various ways, perhaps challenges arise, perhaps wrong decisions made by some other people or all things are underestimated, and you have the responsibility to decide a specific situation, and that is the job of the minister.

It may not necessarily be very easy for everyone to deal with. (…) Everyone has to assess for himself whether he sees an opportunity to continue solving those problems. If not, then someone else will have to solve those problems”, stressed I.Šimonytė.

On Tuesday, G. Jakštas announced his intention to retire at a press conference, which was intended to announce news regarding the intermediate eleventh graders.

“With the Prime Minister’s team, we see that we do not have enough freedom to decide and implement decisions that we believe in ourselves. More than once I had to take responsibility for decisions that I did not make myself. I don’t want to do it anymore. Therefore, today I publicly ask the Prime Minister to accept my resignation from the position of Minister of Education, Science and Sports”, said G. Jakštas.

The minister also informed that he had accepted the letter of resignation of Ramūnas Skaudius, the deputy minister responsible for the implementation of interim inspections.

This is not the first time that G. Jakštas, who has been in office since July of last year, has submitted his resignation request to the Prime Minister.

He once tried to leave for the same reason a few weeks ago, but I. Šimonytė then decided not to grant the minister’s request for the time being.
