Experts point out that going to bed without removing waterproof mascara can cause serious side effects.

According to foreign media outlets such as the New York Post on the 3rd (local time), ophthalmologist Dr. Gurrin Danoa revealed a photo of a female patient’s eye reported in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s journal ‘Ophthalmology’ through his social network service (SNS).

The released photos show dozens of black spots on the inside of the patient’s eyelids. They look like mold. It appears that mascara has not been properly removed, causing a hard deposit to build up on the skin under the eyelids.

“It’s attached to the underside of your upper eyelid, so every time you close your eye, it scratches your cornea,” said Taylor, an ophthalmologist and clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “When it gets scratched, it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.”

The patient also reportedly showed symptoms of follicular conjunctivitis. Severe cases of conjunctivitis can cause the eyelids to swell to the point where it is difficult to open the eyes, and in rare cases, the corneal epithelium can peel off.

Dr. Danoa said, “If you do not remove your eye makeup properly before going to bed, it can cause eye diseases,” and “It is important to completely remove your makeup before going to bed.”

Dark-colored eye shadows, eyeliners, and mascaras contain a lot of additives that increase adhesion to the skin along with dark pigments. If you sleep without removing them, pigmentation around the eyes can occur. The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest part of our body, so even if exposed to pigments for the same amount and time, pigmentation is more likely to occur than other areas.

Also, if you go to bed without cleaning the area around your eyelids, waste products can block the meibomian glands, which are oil glands, and cause diseases such as styes, blepharitis, bloodshot eyes, and dry eyes.

There is also a high possibility of developing sebaceous cysts. Sebaceous cysts are benign tumors the size of 1~2mm grains of rice around the eyes. Sebaceous cysts are often formed when cosmetic ingredients or wastes clump together and harden. They do not cause pain or inflammation, but they often form on the eyelids or cheeks, causing external stress.
