Rock and roll is playing on the radio, student revolts are shaking the world, but the fight for life is taking place in the Czechoslovak Radio newsroom. Director Jiří Mádl has set his new film in the period of the Prague Spring. It tells the story of a group of journalists who fight the secret services and are determined to bring independent news at any cost.

The film called Waves will begin showing in theaters on August 15. This Wednesday, the authors published the first trailer from it.

Mádl was inspired by the true story of a group of correspondents of the international editorial office of the Czechoslovak Radio, but transformed it into a thriller. The protagonist is faced with a decision whether to protect the truth and his colleagues, or his own brother. “They are completely different, and they are separated by ten years,” said Mádl about the brothers. “Tomáš wants to remain in complete darkness, away from all social events, while Páj’s impatience with the times begins to threaten their fragile household. However, the relationship between the two brothers is the pillar of the entire film. They learn the strength of their mutual bond at the moment when, despite the dramatic circumstances, it is essential to take care of one for the other and to protect a meaningful life. Even at the cost of the fact that they will have to sacrifice a lot,” he added.

The film stars Vojtěch Vodochodský, Táňa Pauhofová, Marika Šoposká, Martin Hofmann and Stanislav Majer.

Thirty-seven-year-old Mádl became famous as an actor in the titles Snowboarders, Gympl and Children of the Night. He made his debut as a director and screenwriter in 2014 with the film Pojedeme k moři, which was nominated in several categories for the Czech Lion award, as well as his second feature film Na střeše from 2019. Waves is his third author project. The crew shot the last night crowd scene at Prague Castle in November.
