In China, there have been a series of incidents of theft by disguising oneself as someone else while wearing a ‘silicon face mask’ shaped like a human face.

According to China’s state-run Central Television (CCTV) and other sources on the 21st, there were many reports of people wearing silicone masks breaking into homes and stealing items in Shanghai, Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and other areas in China in the first half of this year.

Earlier this month, a Shanghai man was arrested by police after he allegedly broke into four homes wearing a silicone mask shaped like an old man’s face and stole valuables worth 100,000 yuan (US$15,000).

Shanghai police told CCTV that “a man wearing a black coat and a mask entered the complex. Strangely, there was no footage of the man leaving.”

In June, a suspect wearing a silicone mask and breaking into a home in Jiangsu Province was caught by police after stealing cash and digital devices.

The investigation revealed that both cases involved wearing silicone masks purchased online at the time of the crimes. They left the crime scene wearing the masks and pretending to be someone else.

Authorities said, “Recently, crimes using silicone masks, wigs, helmets, etc. as disguises have been on the rise,” and “the number has increased three to four times compared to previous years.”

In fact, if you search for ‘silicone mask’ on Chinese shopping platforms such as Taobao, you can easily find related products.

Masks sold range in price from several tens of yuan to tens of thousands of yuan.

High-end masks can also be custom-made. Cheaper masks often fail to recognize faces, but expensive masks costing tens of thousands of yuan can pass through less sensitive facial recognition devices, the outlet explained.

While it is not easy to pass through a facial recognition device while wearing a silicone mask, industry officials said authorities should register and review silicone face masks and manufacturers based on a high level of simulation.

It was also pointed out that supervision of mask sales on e-commerce platforms should be strengthened to prevent masks from being used for crimes.
