More than three months after his horse riding accident during the Rocio pilgrimage in southern Spain, and a month after his release from hospital, Sergio Rico received a visit from Nasser al-Khelaïfi at his home in Seville. And on this occasion, the Spanish goalkeeper, who remained in a coma for a long time due to head trauma, spoke of his convalescence in an interview with PSG TV.
“The truth is that I’m doing very well,” explained the 30-year-old goalkeeper, dressed in PSG gear. The recovery process is going pretty well. I am still being monitored with medication and the doctors have decided that I can go home. I feel better every day, I feel stronger,” the goalkeeper began.
He quickly spoke of his passion for football: “When I woke up, the first thought I had was about football. I was in a hospital room lying on a bed unable to move, with cables around me, an IV in my arm, and I directly asked the doctor if I could ever play football again. I hope his answer is yes.”
“I feel lucky to be part of this family”
The tragedy that affected the Spaniard moved the whole world. Starting with the Parisian supporters. Looking back at the images of the title match against Clermont last season (2-3), where PSG fans sang to his glory in the 16th minute and where Kylian Mbappé held up a jersey with his name after scoring, Sergio Rico was very touched: “I am moved when I see this video. Because I think back to all the messages of support that I received from people at the club, from the President, Nasser al-Khelaïfi, from Luis Campos… It touched me a lot, just like the gestures of my teammates, their goal celebrations, wearing my jersey. We see it on the video, in the locker room, all the jerseys with my name. I’m moved, it’s an honor for me and I feel lucky to be part of this family.”
The Spanish goalkeeper explained that he would have new tests to take on September 22: “I hope I have good news. I want to return as quickly as possible with the team to Paris. My ultimate goal is to come back this year to be with the team before the end of the season.”
