For the first six years of her life she lived in Argentina, where her family – which she herself defined as “gypsy and nomadic” – had moved from Miami, then there was a new move, this time to London and for Anya Taylor-Joy the nightmare began. In fact, not speaking a word of English (she refused to learn it for about two years, convinced that this would prompt her parents to return to Argentina), she felt like a fish out of water. “I didn’t feel fit anywhere – the 26-year-old actress told “The Drew Barrymore Show” – because I was too British to be Argentinean, too Argentinean to be English and too American to be anything. The children did not understand me in any way. I used to lock myself in lockers and spent a lot of time at school crying in the toilets.”
More and more frequent episodes
The bullying episodes became increasingly frequent and cruel, so much so that she left London for New York at the age of 14 and then dropped out of school two years later to pursue her dream of acting, which initially worried the parents. “I was really, really lucky to have two parents like mine,” Taylor-Joy continued, “because when I was bullied at school about my looks, my mom always told me to look inside other people, to look at their heart, not their class or what they did for work. And I really have to thank you for your advice, because you have been very useful to me ».
