“I was fighting for my own life all the time!” – Style – Kommersant

by time news

Joel Coen’s first solo film, The Tragedy of Macbeth, was released on Apple TV+ on January 14, starring two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington and four-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand. In its 400 years of existence, Shakespeare’s tragedy has been staged and filmed countless times, but it is Cohen’s film that promises to become a new classic. B&W and cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel (“Amelie”, “Inside Llewyn Davis”) combined with music by composer Carter Burwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, “The Big Lebowski”, “No Country for Old Men”) and impeccable acting have already received high marks from film critics and first viewers. On the eve of the premiere, Kommersant Style met with Denzel Washington, Corey Hawkins and Alex Hassel, who played the roles of Macbeth, Macduff and Ross, to talk about how the film was made, about the superstitions that are associated with the productions of Macbeth in theater and cinema, and about why the relationship of the couple Macbeth is a kind of continuation of the love story of Romeo and Juliet.
