New Delhi: Infosys is a leading IT company of the country. Its foundation was laid by NR Narayana Murthy in 1981. Nandan Nilekani and Chris Gopalakrishnan along with Murthy took Infosys to the heights of success. Narayan Murthy took over its command till 2002. His leadership transformed Infosys into a global powerhouse. It shaped India’s IT industry. The founder of Infosys still remembers the day when Infosys was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1999. This was one of his proudest moments.

NR Narayana Murthy is a visionary leader in the IT landscape of the country. He founded Infosys in 1981. He led the company as CEO until 2002. In its four decade journey, Infosys has achieved many successes domestically and internationally. Along with other personalities like Nandan Nilekani and Chris Gopalakrishnan, Murthy made Infosys a top IT firm.

“When we became the first Indian company to be listed on Nasdaq, I remember sitting on a high stool in front of those scorching lights,” Murthy said at the India Today Conclave 2024 on Friday. I believe that we were doing something that no Indian company had ever done before.

Nasdaq listing of Infosys

The Nasdaq listing in March 1999 was a strategic move for Infosys. Its purpose was to attract top talent. Along with this, the facility for future acquisitions was to be provided. Murthy’s decision was a significant leap for Infosys. This gave the company global reach. Operational capabilities also increased.

Sudha Murthy becomes Murthy’s biggest strength

Sudha Murthy, who was recently sworn in as Rajya Sabha MP, had also revealed how she had given Rs 10,000 to her husband NR Narayana Murthy as seed capital to launch Infosys. But, he had decided to maintain Rs 250 in his savings account. He was afraid of risk after previous failure. The 73-year-old engineer recalled how she had opposed her husband’s 1981 announcement that he wanted to start a software company. Both of them already had lucrative jobs.
