President Gustavo Petro announced his participation in the “Marcha de las Canas,” a mobilization scheduled for September 19 in defense of the pension reform recently approved by Congress.

The call seeks to protect the law that benefits senior citizens who were unable to access the pension system and whose future could be in the hands of the Constitutional Court.in the face of a wave of lawsuits questioning the rule.

The origin of this mobilization is due to the concern generated after the decision of the Court to overturn the statutory law of the Electoral Code. In this context, the director of Prosperidad Social, Gustavo Bolívar called on senior citizens to take to the streets and defend the pension reform approved by the president in July, which has become the target of more than 106 lawsuits, including one filed by Senator Paloma Valencia.

Bolívar, who has been a close ally of President Petro since his time as a senator, warned of the risks facing the law, stating: “I call on the old men and women of Colombia to defend the Pension Reform before the Constitutional Court. With 106 lawsuits, including that of Paloma Valencia, the country’s privileged people who defend the interests of the Private Funds want to leave them without the pension bonus of $225,000.

This pension bonus is one of the pillars of the reform, which seeks to offer economic relief to older adults. who were unable to access a pension, in a country where access to social security has historically been limited. President Petro has also fervently defended this initiative, calling on the Constitutional Court not to dismantle the law that could improve the lives of millions of older people.

“We must not let it go to waste. That is why I ask justice, from here, to look at it from the eyes, not of the dollar, but of love. That is another way of measuring and can be more efficient and effective,” Petro said in recent days, stressing the importance of prioritizing social justice over economic interests. In his speech, the president stressed that the Social Rule of Law must be the basis for solving the country’s most pressing problems.

The mobilization, initially scheduled for August 30, was postponed due to the truckers’ strike and rescheduled for September 19. Through his social networks, Petro reiterated his support for the cause: “I hope they think with desire because they would be telling Colombia that millions of poor old people do not have the opportunity to live their last days better.. These are desires of social selfishness, which is the complete opposite of the Social State of Law. That is why I am going to accompany the elderly in their mobilization for dignity.”
