The Spanish national team enters the quarter-finals of the European Nations Championship “Euro 2024” today, Friday, against its German counterpart, feeling very confident.
“Today, we will defend as usual, if we can’t keep up with them, I will ask UEFA for permission about that,” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente joked.
Dani Carvajal used the same phrase when asked about his former Real Madrid teammate, German Toni Kroos.
These statements showed that the Spanish team will enter the match, which many consider to be an early final, in the best possible mood.
The Matadors left the best impression so far in the tournament, as they are the only team to have won all their matches in the tournament, while wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams shone alongside midfielders Pedri, Rodri and Fabian Ruiz.
The German national team has not defeated its Spanish counterpart in major tournaments since 1988, and lost to it in the last two matches in the knockout stages, in the Euro 2008 final and the 2010 World Cup semi-final.
“It could have been the final of the European Championship, but I think it will be a very close match on a football level,” said De la Fuente.
“The closer you get to the final, the better teams remain. Nothing is free here,” he added.
He stressed: “The German national team is a great team, but we also have a great team, so we must play with confidence and joy, we know our capabilities.”
“The fact that Germany is the host country doesn’t necessarily give them an advantage,” he said. “It can help, but it also creates pressure, a lot of pressure.”
