It was reported that singer and musical actor Kim Junsu was threatened by a female AfreecaTV BJ and was defrauded of 800 million won. Kim Junsu’s agency said, “There are many other victims besides Kim Junsu,” and “we will take legal action.”
Kim Junsu’s agency, Palm Tree Island, issued a statement on the 15th and said, “As recently reported, Mr. A, a BJ at AfreecaTV, recorded a conversation with Kim Junsu for illegal purposes and threatened to distribute it on social media.”
According to Kim Junsu’s side, Mr. A said, “It’s not Kim Junsu’s fault, but even if a single untrue article comes out about a celebrity, his image will be tarnished. Since Kim Junsu can’t even appear on TV, he won’t be able to restore his image. He continued to threaten Kim Junsu, saying, “I have nothing to lose.”
Kim Junsu’s side emphasized, “Kim Junsu is an obvious victim.” He said, “Kim Junsu confirmed that there were many victims of Mr. A’s blackmail threats, not just himself, and decided to take legal action to prevent further damage.”
He continued, “Please understand that it is difficult to provide a detailed explanation as the current case is at the court warrant trial stage. “We will reveal additional positions as soon as the investigation and trial are completed,” he said, adding that he would respond strongly.
Previously, Munhwa Ilbo reported that Kim Junsu was extorted 800 million won by Afreeca TV BJ. According to reports, the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on the 13th on charges of blackmail under the Aggravated Punishment Act for Specific Economic Crimes.
Mr. A is accused of threatening Kim Junsu and stealing 840 million won worth of money on 101 occasions from September 2020 to last month.
According to the police, Mr. A recorded conversations and audio with Kim Junsu after getting to know him in 2019. Afterwards, it was reported that he threatened to leak the recording file and received money from Kim Junsu in exchange for preventing it. It was found that Mr. A committed the crime for the purpose of raising money for drug administration.

Time.news Interview: The Impact of Celebrity Threat and Blackmail in the Digital Age
Editor (E): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have a special guest, Dr. Jina Park, a sociologist and media expert who specializes in the impact of social media on personal and public identity. We’re here to discuss a troubling incident involving K-pop star Kim Junsu, who was recently threatened and defrauded by a female streamer. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Park.
Dr. Jina Park (D): Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here, especially to discuss such an important issue.
E: To start, could you briefly summarize the events surrounding Kim Junsu’s case as reported?
D: Certainly. Kim Junsu, a well-known singer and musical actor in South Korea, has been threatened by a female AfreecaTV BJ who reportedly defrauded him of 800 million won. The BJ, referred to as Mr. A, allegedly recorded conversations with Junsu for illegal purposes and threatened to release sensitive materials on social media. The agency representing Junsu confirmed he is one of many victims and is taking legal action.
E: That’s quite alarming. How do you perceive the implications of such incidents on a celebrity’s personal and public image, especially in the age of social media?
D: The implications are profound. In today’s digital landscape, information can spread rapidly and uncontrollably. A single false narrative can tarnish a public figure’s reputation in an instant. Kim Junsu’s fear of unsubstantiated rumors damaging his image highlights the vulnerability of celebrities to such threats. Additionally, social media platforms can act as weapons for extortion, as we see in this case.
E: You mentioned the role of social media. Can you elaborate on how the anonymity and reach of these platforms contribute to such predicaments?
D: Absolutely. Social media provides a veil of anonymity that can embolden malicious behavior. Individuals can act without fear of immediate consequences, feeling insulated behind their screens. This anonymity allows for the manipulation of personal content and the creation of narratives that can harm reputations. In Kim Junsu’s case, the threat of releasing private conversations paints a vivid picture of how personal information can be weaponized.
E: Do you think there’s a broader societal issue at play here concerning the expectations placed on public figures?
D: Yes, indeed. Public figures are often seen as living under a microscope, with many viewing them as fair game for speculation. This creates an environment where their privacy is constantly encroached upon. The extreme pressure to maintain a flawless image can lead to severe consequences for the individual, sometimes impacting their mental health and wellbeing. It’s essential for society to cultivate empathy and understanding toward the challenges faced by celebrities.
E: What preventive measures can be suggested for celebrities to safeguard themselves against such threats?
D: Firstly, education on digital privacy is crucial. Celebrities and their teams must be trained on how to handle sensitive information and be aware of potential vulnerabilities. Additionally, they should have robust legal support, as Kim Junsu is doing, to take immediate action against threats. broader legislative measures are needed to combat online harassment and extortion, creating a safer environment for everyone.
E: As we wrap up, what message do you hope audiences take away from this incident and our discussion today?
D: This situation underscores the need for heightened awareness of the repercussions of online behavior. We must advocate for a culture that respects privacy and discourages harmful actions. Our collective responsibility is to create a digital landscape where individuals, regardless of their status, can feel safe and valued.
E: Thank you, Dr. Park, for your insights. It’s an important conversation, and we appreciate your expertise.
D: Thank you for having me. Let’s hope for a more respectful and responsible digital world.
E: And thank you to our readers for tuning in. Stay safe and informed.
