In a highly competitive cricket team like India, a player who scores a century and leaves a match with an injury does not get a place when he recovers from it. In such a situation, bowlers who miss out on opportunities due to loss of form and poor bowling, do well in local cricket or IPL series to give a comeback. Star Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who could not find success in both of those, is currently struggling to make a comeback with a good performance in the County Championship Royal London Cup series.
Senior batsman Pujara, who was removed from the team at one stage, has started to follow the path of comeback after raining runs in this county series. He is playing for Middlesex team in the ongoing Royal London Cup series. Umesh Yadav, who has bowled tremendously in the 5 league matches he has participated in so far on pitches that are flat enough for Pujara to play in different cities of England, has taken 15 wickets and helped the team advance to the next round.

Comeback Struggle:
He also topped the list of highest wicket takers in the Royal London Cup series and was impressive in the recent IPL series for Kolkata with 16 wickets in 12 matches at a good economy of 7.06. Hailing from Maharashtra, he excelled in local cricket and got an opportunity to play for India in 2010 and gradually progressed to become a premier fast bowler.
Especially in the 2015 World Cup held in Australia, he performed amazingly and set a record as the Indian bowler who took the most wickets. But after that, he lost his form and began to perform modestly, he was dropped from the Indian team after 2018 as he gave runs in the IPL series as well. However, he is still in the Test team and is struggling to get a consistent place in the playing XI due to the presence of Bumrah, Shami and Siraj.

In this case, Umesh Yadav has expressed his hope that he will play in the Indian team again, just like former Indian legend Zaheer Khan, when he stumbled in 2006, performed amazingly in the county championship series and gave a comeback. Here is what he talked about in a recent interview: “The flat pitches here are not easy for fast bowlers. You can see that by scoring 300+ runs in all competitions. However, I am trying to take wickets with the new ball and the old ball in the last overs.”

“Yorker balls are my target. And if I perform well in the coming days, my fundamentals will improve and I will be able to play for India again. Because I want to show such great activities for the country. Playing in this county team gives me a lot of confidence.”

“I know that when the main bowler is not in this team, I have to take that responsibility and perform well. So bowling under pressure responsibly is different. However I happily try to give my best under pressure. So we have won 4 out of 5 matches. And I also know that Zaheer Khan’s career changed completely after playing in this county championship series (for Worcestershire in 2006).”

“So I hope a similar transformation will happen in my career. I will bring the experience of playing here. So, if I get a chance to play for India again, I will use the tactics I have learned here and try to perform better,” he said. However, with the arrival of young fast bowlers like Arshideep Singh, Avesh Khan and Umran Malik, the chance of him making a comeback in the white ball Indian team is seen as less.
