In an interview with ORTB journalists on Saturday December 23, 2023, President Patrice Talon spoke on several subjects, in particular that linked to his succession after 2026. On this subject, he said he was ready to wet the jersey so that the development started can continue.

The news recently has been marked by the solicitation of Olivier Boko’s candidacy for the 2026 presidential election. For the Head of State, Patrice Talon, the moment is not right to talk about what will happen in 2026. And in the future, more than any candidate would come from anywhere other than political parties to take part. This is also the main reason why he says he called his former Oswald Homéky to order. According to Talon’s explanations, we must start by respecting the provisions and laws set out from now on. Homéky, he noted, ignored his party to promote his own candidate. Even if the Head of State admits that he has an equal distance with everyone as does his friend Olivier Boko, he also stressed that he will invest in the animation of political life after his mandate. “I will not be inactive,” said Patrice Talon about his succession. Regarding the demand for a national base by the Democrats, he says that this will achieve nothing but to once again amuse the country. There is nothing like a crisis that requires a national base, according to him. It must be said that with this departure of the head of state, the Democrats’ amnesty bill is on the verge of failure. “It’s a folkloric request,” he maintains. Because political actors must answer for their actions just like civil citizens.
But when asked whether he had been forgiven before, Patrice Talon declared that no one had forgiven him for anything at all. “It makes me laugh when people say I’ve been forgiven. No one has forgiven me for anything at all because I was not guilty of anything at all. There have been several lawsuits filed against me and I have won everything, both here in Benin and in France. It was not me who requested reconciliation with my elder Boni Yayi,” he declared.
He recalled that it was his elder Boni Yayi who made this request because he saw that he was very active politically. “As I was not guilty of anything, he wanted reconciliation. And that’s where the former Senegalese president Abdou Diouf called me to tell me that I must reconcile with my eldest. Which I accepted at his request. So no one has forgiven me for anything at all. It makes me laugh when some people say that I have been forgiven. It was President Yayi who wanted us to take this step. I wasn’t asking for anything at all. Moreover, the Beninese and French courts acquitted me. So I don’t understand why we’re confusing this comedy with the serious facts for which people have been convicted,” the President of the Republic made clear.
