Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen said, ‘Prime Minister has assigned me as the Minister of Health Ministry to serve the people. I am not a political leader, nor have I elected. I will work impartially and fearlessly in the service of people.’

He said these things in a special exchange of views with doctors, nurses and other officials of the district and divisional levels under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare working in Cox’s Bazar district on Saturday (February 17).

Member of Parliament of Cox’s Bazar-3 Constituency and Whip of Jatiya Sangsad Saimum Sarwar Kamal, Secretary of Health Education and Family Welfare Department said in the meeting. Azizur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Health Professor Dr. Abul Basar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Director General of the Department of Health Education Professor Dr. Tito Mia, Director General of Family Planning Directorate Sahan Ara Banu and senior officials of the Ministry and Directorate were present.

In the meeting, the Minister of Health Dr. Samant Lal Sen. He urged everyone to perform their duties properly in their respective workplaces to face the challenges of the Health and Family Planning Department.

Member of Parliament of Cox’s Bazar-3 constituency and Whip of the National Assembly Saimum Sarwar Kamal presented the demands of the people of the district to improve the quality of medical services and medical education in Cox’s Bazar.

In the afternoon, the Health Minister held another meeting with the teachers and students of the institution at Cox’s Bazar Medical College Auditorium. He said, medical students must first become good doctors by studying carefully. Along with this, students must engage themselves in the medical profession with an honest and ideal mindset. We don’t just want thousands of doctors, we want good doctors—that’s what students need to understand.

In the meeting, the Health Minister assured that the construction work of Cox’s Bazar Medical College Hospital will be started soon.

It should be noted that the Health Minister visited Cox’s Bazar from 15 to 17 February. On the first day of the visit, on the evening of February 15, he addressed the 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (OGSB) and the inaugural session of the 32nd International Scientific Conference. There he sought the cooperation of obstetricians and gynaecologists. The health minister said, ‘Please help me. Whatever needs to be done for the doctors, I will talk to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and take the same measures.’

On February 16, the second day of the visit, the doctor inaugurated the conference. There he addressed the principals of all the medical colleges of the country. In his speech, the minister expressed confidence in improving the quality of medical education.

On the afternoon of February 16, the Health Minister made a surprise visit to Union Hospital Limited and 250-bed Cox’s Bazar District Headquarters Hospital located on Hospital Road in Cox’s Bazar. At this time, he was accompanied by the Director General of the Department of Health, Director (Hospitals and Clinics). Abul Hossain Md. Moinul Ahsan, Divisional Director (Chittagong) Dr. Md. Dr. Mohiuddin and civil surgeon of Cox’s Bazar. Bipasha Khisa was present.

During the inspection, the health minister expressed his displeasure at the various irregularities and mismanagement of the private hospital. The hospital was operating ICU, CT scan machine, operation theater and post operative room outside the scope of license. The Health Minister ordered the closure of these parts of the hospital. He also ordered the transfer of the patients admitted to the unauthorized ICU and post-operative rooms to the District Headquarters Hospital on an urgent basis.

Later, the Minister spoke to the patients and doctors in charge of the Emergency Department, Women’s Medicine Department, CCU, Sheikh Russell Neonatal Service Unit of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital. The minister directed the hospital officials to conduct all the tests in the hospital itself.

On the last day of the visit, the Health Minister visited Ukhia Upazila Health Complex in the morning on February 17. During this time he spoke to patients in emergency department, outdoor and indoor. Later, he instructed to provide service with sincerity in an exchange meeting with the doctors of Ukhia Upazila Health Complex.

After this, the minister visited Khuniapalong Union sub-health center of Ramu upazila and witnessed the picture of medical and family planning services at the union level.
