The visit of a political figure to a book fair is always the occasion for comical connections between his life and his works. The Angoulême International Comics Festival, which Rachida Dati attended on Saturday January 27, was no exception to this rule. Freshly returned from India, where she was part of the delegation which accompanied the state visit of the President of the Republic, the new Minister of Culture did not seem to suffer from jet lag – even if she invoked “blocked ears from the plane” not to answer a question from Monde.

His presence, announced two days ago, was awaited by the world meeting of graphic art, which opened Thursday January 25 and ends Sunday. For the minister, this was her first major trip to a cultural event. First stop at the Angoulême Museum, where the former Minister of Justice visited the exhibition by the Italian artist Lorenzo Mattotti. Entitled “Catching the race”, the set made up of around fifty colorful canvases representing athletes in movement is compared with texts by the novelist Maria Pourchet written for the occasion.

The mayor of the 7th arrondissement of Paris, who, until her arrival in mid-January on rue de Valois, did not publicly demonstrate any particular interest in culture, was all ears to the explanations of Lorenzo Mattotti who came to accompany her in his museum wandering. “But in fact, you only draw men? »she questions him, before being told that several drawings also represent women. “You know I met Uderzo? »she hastens to tell him a little further along the route.

“I want to act”

While the appointment of the minister created surprise in the different branches of the cultural sector, we cannot say that her coming to Angoulême aroused very marked opposition. A few pan noises at the entrance to the museum, a “Indicted for corruption!” » shouted as she left and a festive demonstration of around a hundred people welcomed her. At the Nouveau Monde, the marquee which brings together independent publishing houses, the minister’s seduction operation seems to have worked with the authors. On Cornelius’ stand, she grabs a book, The Assizes of impostureexclaiming with laughter: “But it’s mine!” » Among the thirty albums with which the minister left also included Revolution (South Acts).
