Stroke, amputated patients, brain injured patients, head trauma patients, pediatric pathologies, cerebral palsy: first used to reduce stress in patients, virtual reality is successfully investing in a new field: the rehabilitation of disabilities. “One of the fundamental principles of rehabilitation is intensity, repetition. Virtual reality provides a fun, less daunting approach, and therefore keeps the patient motivated,” analyzes Alexandre Quesnel, head of department, specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the regional disability center, in Rouen (Seine-Maritime).

Concretely, how does it work? Come to Saint-Saturnin (Sarthe), where the Center de l’Arche will be equipped in 2023 for its 250 daily patients. Among the equipment, the kinequantum allows patients to choose the environment in which they wish to do their rehabilitation. “We have a patient who really likes music. We offered him a rehabilitation exercise that made him bang on drums,” describes Annie Coutard, health executive associated with the project management.
