“…I would like to draw your attention to the suspension of trains for passenger use…”

June 5, 2023

Open Letter to the Respectful attention of the elected officials of Haut-Ogooué and Ogooué-Lolo.

Libreville, June 05, 2023

Subject: Situation of transport for passenger use by rail

Ladies and Gentlemen, Honorable Members,

Ladies and Gentlemen, Venerable Senators,

Ladies and Gentlemen, Central and District Mayors

Ladies and Gentlemen, Municipal and Departmental Councillors,

Dear elected officials,

Allow me to write to you as a Gabonese citizen, residing in the 2nd Arrondissement of the Commune of Franceville in the Peace district, about the situation of rail transport suspended for a few months already and whose populations having a strong attachment to these two sister provinces are the victims.

Dear elected officials, my approach today, that of inviting you to respectfully take up this file, is the result of an observation. First, I would like to draw your attention to the suspension of passenger trains. This situation undoubtedly has a considerable impact on the socio-economic situation of economically weak Gabonese living both in the interior and in the hinterland, in this context of high cost of living. As a reminder, and you know it better than me, this category of the population cannot afford a plane ticket which would cost around 400,000 CFA francs (Go/Return), i.e. 8 to 10 times higher than that of the train depending on the type of ticket.

The movement of populations is all the more difficult considering the poor state of the national road linking the cities of the south-east of the country to Libreville, this means of transport remains however the most accessible.

It is true that renovation work on the railway is still in progress, but I am pleased to note a strong lack of communication on the levels of execution of the work and the prospects for their delivery. This gives a very bad image to the population. In addition, they wonder why only ore trains are running today.

Dear elected officials, the ore trains certainly have strong economic stakes that you and I can try to better understand, but certainly not a good number of our compatriots. It is therefore urgent to take the necessary steps to solve the transport problems that we all face.

While hoping that this interpellation will hold your attention, I would like to close by borrowing the quote from the philosopher Jean Bodin who says: Far from believing that the economy works autonomously, and affirms that “there is no wealth except for men“. But, what place does man really occupy in the economic system? ” There is no wealth except for men ».

Emmanuel YOU ARE GOING TO FIGHT

Gabonese citizen, Resident in the 2nd Arrondissement of the Commune of Franceville, Quartier la Paix.
