The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued a statement in which it asked the Supreme Court of Justice to comply with its constitutional duty to elect, as soon as possible, the head of the Attorney General’s Officeguaranteeing impartiality and institutionality in the process.
In the released statement, The IACHR expressed its concern about the delay in the appointment of the new attorney general, stressing that this delay could weaken the Colombian justice system.
The organization recalled that The election of the new prosecutor was scheduled to conclude on December 7, 2023and highlighted the timely sending by the Presidency of the Republic of a shortlist of highly qualified candidates on August 2 of the same year.
However, due to the lack of quorum and subsequently the absence of political agreement among the justices, The Attorney General’s Office was placed under an interim mandate as of February 12, 2020.4, date on which the previous attorney general’s term ended.

The IACHR emphasized the importance of this process being carried out with transparency and access to information, guaranteeing equality, non-discrimination, training and merit in accordance with international human rights standards.
Likewise, he highlighted the fundamental role played by the Attorney General’s Office in the fight against impunity and access to justice, pointing out that the absence of a head and the appointment of interim people could affect its independence and autonomy.
The Commission called on all levels of the State to prioritize democratic institutions and asked the Executive to provide all the necessary guarantees so that the selection process is completed without interference.
President Gustavo Petro Urrego shared the IACHR’s statement on his X social network account in the last few hours, highlighting the importance of the situation.
