IAEA Director General Visits Liberia, Pledges Support for Cancer Care and Sustainable Development
Liberia is receiving unprecedented support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Director General Rafael Grossi completed a historic visit to the West African nation, the first by a leader of the organization. The visit culminated in the groundbreaking of Liberia’s first dedicated radiotherapy facility, a critical step in improving cancer care access for the country’s population.
The Director General announced the initiative, supported by Rays of Hope, stating, “Today, with Rays of Hope support, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the country’s only radiotherapy facility. We are helping establish it, starting with a mammography unit and training to bring life-saving care to those who need it most. More support will soon be on the way.” The facility will initially focus on establishing a mammography unit and providing essential training for medical personnel.
During his visit, Grossi engaged in high-level discussions with Liberian President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Acting Foreign Minister Cllr. Deweh Grey, Health Minister Louise Kpoto, and other key ministers at the Environmental Protection Agency. These meetings underscored Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with the IAEA on a range of crucial development initiatives.
Expanding IAEA Support Beyond Healthcare
The IAEA’s commitment to Liberia extends far beyond cancer treatment. The agency is actively working to bolster food security through its Atoms4Food initiative, enhancing radiation safety protocols, and promoting sustainable water management practices. These efforts are directly aligned with Liberia’s national energy strategy, aiming to create a more resilient and sustainable future for the country.
Liberia’s coastal environment is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of ocean acidification and plastic pollution. Recognizing this challenge, the Director General highlighted the potential of nuclear science, including the NUTEC Plastics program, to address these issues. “Nuclear science, including support through our NUTEC Plasticscan help protect its coasts and communities,” he explained.
The IAEA is positioning itself as a long-term partner in Liberia’s development. “There is much more we can do together. The IAEA is here, ready to continue supporting Liberia’s development in all its aspects,” the Director General affirmed, signaling a sustained commitment to the nation’s progress.
