Thus, African experts from 20 member states have benefited, over the past year, from training organized in the Kingdom on issues related to radiological and nuclear security, Mr. Farhane said in a speech during a session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is being held from September 9 to 13 in Vienna.

The Kingdom has also organized capacity building activities for experts from more than 40 member states in Africa, the diplomat recalled, noting that scholarships, scientific visits, workshops as well as missions of regulatory control and nuclear safety experts for the authorities of African member states are regularly organized.

Last year, Morocco organized more than 10 regional training courses, workshops and seminars and trained more than 40 African candidates for masters in radiopharmacy, medical physics, human nutrition and nuclear techniques, radiation protection, radiological safety, as well as doctoral candidates, the diplomat detailed.

He added that Morocco’s training infrastructure for peaceful nuclear applications received three awards from the IAEA last year. The National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST) was designated last September as a Collaborating Center in the fields of molecular biology and genomics, within the framework of the Integrated Action against Zoonoses (ZODIAC).

For its part, the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN) received the first distinction in Africa as an International Center based on Research Reactors (ICERR), while the National Center for Oncology in Rabat was designated as an anchor center within the framework of the “Rays of Hope” initiative, he continued.

In conclusion, Mr. Farhane stressed that Morocco remains fully committed to working closely with its regional and international partners contributing to the strengthening of the international nuclear security regime and the achievement of the IAEA’s objectives, in order to preserve the balance between the safe and secure uses of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes.
