The veteran actor (85), known from “X-Men” and “The Lord of the Rings” films, has given his first interview after the accident. He confirms that he broke his wrist and sustained a minor fracture in his spine.

This has made the previously very active McKellen afraid to leave his own home. He is still wearing a neck brace.

– I avoid going out because I am afraid that someone will bump into me, and I have dealt with terrible pain in my shoulders due to the impact my body received, he tells Saga Magazine according to NME.

Ian McKellen lost his footing during a fight scene in “Player Kings” in London’s West End in June. He was taken to the hospital while the performance was canceled. Shortly thereafter, his PR agent stated that McKellen would fully and quickly recover, but it turned out that he was unable to return to the show.

McKellen reveals that the so-called “fat suit” he wore for the role of the overweight Falstaff character saved him when he fell.

– It protected my ribs and other joints, so I consider myself lucky. I have relived the fall countless times. It was terrible. I thought it was the end of something and it was very frightening. I have to tell myself that I am not too old to be an actor, and that it was an accident.
