IBM has announced the construction of its first quantum computing data center in Europe, which it expects will open its doors in 2024 and with which it will give access to this technology to companies, research institutions and government agencies.

The data center will be located at the IBM facility in Ehningen, in Germanyand will serve as the European cloud region for IBM Quantum, so users can deliver services for their quantum computing research and exploratory activity, with all working data processed within the borders of the European Union.

This is IBM’s second quantum data center and quantum cloud region, following its New York (United States) facility. The technology company expects it to be operational in 2024, and has anticipated that it will feature multiple IBM quantum computing systems, each with utility-scale quantum processors, that is, more than 100 qubits.

Jay Gambettamember of IBM and vice president of IBM Quantum, has noted that Europe “the envisioned quantum data center and associated cloud region will offer European users a new option in order to harness the power of quantum computing in an effort to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.

will be a “integral piece” of the global effort that IBM is making, as pointed out by the general director of IBM for EMEA, Paula Assis. “It will provide new opportunities for our clients to collaborate, side by side, with our scientists in Europe, as well as with their own clients, as they explore how best to apply quantum in their industry,” she added.

The IBM Quantum Network currently has more than 60 organizations across Europe accessing quantum hardware and software via the cloud, including the Bundeswehr University, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), E.ON, the Organization European Commission for Nuclear Research (CERN), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Poznan Supercomputing and Network Center (PSNC) and T-Systems.
