International Business Machines Corp. CEO Arvind Krishna told Bloomberg News on Monday that the company anticipates a hiring halt because artificial intelligence (AI) could eventually replace 7,800 jobs.

According to Krishna, hiring in administrative functions like human resources will stop or be reduced. He also predicted that within five years, automation and AI could replace 30% of non-customer-facing roles.

His comments come at a time when AIs have captured the attention of people around the world following the launch of the popular OpenAI chatbot, Microsoft Corp.-backed ChatGPT, in November last year.

The PC maker told the publication that the reduction could include not filling vacant positions as a result of defection.

IBM did not immediately respond to a request for comment from media requesting the interview.
