In 2023, the EU produced 3.2 billion liters of ice cream, according to Eurostat data published today on the statistics agency’s website. This represents a drop of 1.4 percent compared to 2022, when production was 3.3 billion liters.
Among EU countries, Germany is the main producer of ice cream in 2023, producing 612 million liters, followed by France with 568 million liters and Italy with 527 million liters.
In addition to being the largest producer of ice cream in 2023, Germany produces ice cream at an average price of 1.8 euros per liter. France reported an average price of €2.2 per liter of ice cream, while the average price in Italy was €2.6 per liter.
The most expensive ice cream is produced in Austria with an average price of 7.7 euros per liter of ice cream, followed by Hungary with 4.8 euros per liter and Greece with 3.7 euros per liter.
Apart from Germany, the cheapest ice cream was produced in Lithuania with an average price of €1.9 per litre, followed by the Czech Republic at €2.0 per liter and Sweden at €2.1 per litre.
France accounts for a fifth of all ice cream exports outside the EU
In 2023, EU countries exported 261 million kilograms of ice cream to countries outside the EU, with a total value of €1.04 billion. On the other hand, imports of ice cream from countries outside the EU amounted to 56 million kilograms, valued at 217 million euros. Export volume increased by 5 percent year-on-year or 249 million kg, while non-EU imports decreased by 8 percent in 2023 to 61 million kg.
France exported 52 million kg of ice cream in 2023 to countries outside the EU, representing 20 percent of ice cream exports in the community. This made it the largest exporter of ice cream in the EU, ahead of the Netherlands with 35 million kg of ice cream exports, which was 14 percent of exports, Germany with 29 million kg or 11 percent, Italy with 28 million kg or 11 percent and Ireland with 24 million kg, which is 9 percent of the total export of ice cream in the community to countries outside the EU, BTA reports.
