“The ICE officer, seeing that I did not want to sign the documents, hit me. My face was entirely swollen from the blow she gave me, she threw me against the bed,” Martínez recounted to Univision News.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintains that Martínez entered the United States in 2022 and was subject to deportation due to her immigration status and a prior conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol in Los Angeles. However, Martínez vehemently disputes this characterization.
“I had political asylum, it had been affirmative and I was about to receive my residency. I had my work permit valid until 2030. The work permit does not protect you from deportation, I am talking about asylum,” she argued, asserting that she was on the verge of obtaining permanent residency.
Martínez also revealed that her decision to come to the United States was driven, in part, by fears for her safety in Colombia. Despite the negative experience, she stated she does not plan to return to the U.S.
