Mining energy A freezer quickly consumes many tens of euros per year. That energy cost even shoots up if you don’t use and maintain the device correctly. Do you not only want to optimally store your food, but also your money? Mijnenergie.be investigated where there is potential for savings in the coldest appliance in your home.

1. Defrost and clean the freezer regularly

An ice layer of two millimeters increases energy consumption by ten percent. Manufacturers therefore advise to completely clean the freezer once or twice a year. Striking: icing mainly occurs in the summer, when warm air reaches the appliance through a door that is open for a while. To avoid ice formation, there are so-called ‘no frost’ devices on the market.

From an insulating jacket around the boiler to WiFi with a timer: with these tricks you can quickly save up to a few hundred euros on your energy bill.

2. Fill the freezer completely

A full freezer uses less than a half-filled appliance. After all, the freezer has to cool down the free volume, which requires unnecessary energy. For example, you can fill the empty spaces with a full box or with Styrofoam. It is therefore also a good idea to properly estimate the volume of content when purchasing.

3. Choose an appliance with a favorable energy label

A freezer with a capacity of 166 liters and energy label F consumes 261 kWh of electricity annually. For an appliance with a capacity of 161 liters and energy label D, 166 kWh of electricity is sufficient, almost 40 percent less. In other words, a huge difference, also on your invoice afterwards.

Also make sure you pay the cheapest electricity rate: via our comparator you can quickly and easily find the cheapest contract in your municipality and/or city.

4. Do not set the freezer temperature unnecessarily low

The ideal freezing temperature is -18 °C. Foods do not store longer or better at a lower temperature, but you do pay higher consumption costs.

5. Switch off the freezer during a long absence

Are you going abroad for a long time? Then it is advisable to empty and defrost your device beforehand. This way you avoid energy costs during your absence.

6. Maintain and replace the rubber sealing strip

Badly closing rubbers lead to a loss of temperature and higher energy costs. You can clean the rubber sealing strip with a damp cloth, with or without talc.

7. Defrost foods in the refrigerator

Place frozen foods in the fridge the night before consumption and you don’t have to defrost them in the microwave or oven. In addition, this also cools the refrigerator, which results in double energy savings.
