During the final review process, we received reports of candidates’ match-fixing history.
Ahead of the start of the 2024-2025 season, the appointment of a coach for the short track national team has been put on hold. During the process of selecting a new coach, allegations of match-fixing by a leading candidate were belatedly raised.
An official from the Skating Federation said in a phone call with Newsis on the 10th, “The appointment of the short track team coach, which was scheduled to be completed on the 8th, has been put on hold due to suspicions that the top candidate was punished for match-fixing.”
According to the Ice Skating Federation, the coach in question was selected as the top candidate for the final appointment, and during the final stage of the review, a tip was received that he had a history of match-fixing.
According to a tip received by the federation, he was investigated by the police and fined by the court on charges of colluding the results of games in 2010 for a specific high school player to win.
The federation is currently investigating to confirm the authenticity of the report, and has also requested the person concerned to confirm the facts.
An official from the skating federation said, “It appears that the middle and high school federation did not impose disciplinary action on the coach at the time of the 2010 incident. He also said, “At the time of document review, there was no such fact in the disciplinary history submitted by the candidate.”
Early last month, the Ice Skating Federation posted an open recruitment notice for the short track national team, and the coach was selected as a final candidate and scheduled to be appointed through this board meeting.
An official from the Ice Skating Federation also said, “If we determine that it will be difficult to hire the manager after confirming the facts, we must decide again whether to hire the second-best candidate or post a recruitment notice again.”
Athletes selected as members of the national team for the 2024-2025 season will compete in the first round of the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Tour held in Montreal, Canada, starting on the 25th.
As the remaining time is not long, there are great concerns that the selection of the coach may not be completed before the start of the competition.
