Rejevic: A state of emergency has been imposed in the southern part of the country after a major volcanic eruption in Iceland’s Regen Peninsula. This is being said to be the biggest volcanic eruption in the area. According to BBC report, volcanic lava has flowed to the city of Grindavik. In view of public safety, the Blue Lagoon and the town of Grindavik have been evacuated. This is the fourth incident of volcanic eruption in the Regence peninsula since December. Before this, on February 8 also a volcano had erupted here. Although Iceland’s airspace is still open, smoke emanating from the lava is filling it.Lava reached the city’s defense walls
According to the Civil Defense Service of Iceland, the explosion occurred at 8 pm local time on Saturday between Hogafell and Stora-Skogafell, north of Grindavik. This is the same place where the explosion took place on 8 February. In the footage of the explosion that is emerging, clouds of smoke and glowing and boiling magma are seen coming out from inside the earth. According to reports, Keflavik International Airport and other regional airports were not affected by the explosion.
The BBC quoted geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson as saying that Saturday’s eruption was the most powerful ever seen. Magnus was among those who were evacuated safely from the area by helicopter. Two flows of lava are moving towards west and south. Local media reports said a portion of the lava had reached Grindavik’s eastern defense walls.
Know the complete timeline of the explosion
Grindavik was previously evacuated in November, when the Svartsengi volcano awakened after 800 years. After this, a big crack appeared in the ground in the north of the city. The volcano finally erupted on December 18, sending lava flowing away from Grindavik. A defensive wall was built to protect the city. There was a second eruption on January 14 and the lava reached the city’s defense wall. The wall stopped some of the flow but many buildings were destroyed by the lava.

The third eruption began on 8 February. It subsided within a few hours, but not before the river of lava engulfed the pipeline, cutting off hot water for thousands of people. Iceland is very volcanically sensitive. There are many active volcanic areas in the country, in which volcanic eruptions occur every day and there is enough experience to deal with them. The most devastating event in recent times was the 2010 eruption, when huge clouds of ash spewed into the atmosphere, causing widespread airspace closures in Europe.
