Following the International Court of Justice’s ruling, Benjamin Netanyahu opposed its position, stating that “the Jewish people are not conquerors in their own land.”
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) indicated that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is “illegal” and ordered Tel Aviv to end it “as quickly as possible.”
The UN’s non-binding judicial body has given its position on the legal consequences of the Israeli occupation that began in 1967 and continues to this day.
Nawaf Salam, the presiding judge of the ICJ, said the court “determined that Israel’s continued presence in the Palestinian Territories is illegal,” in a case where more than 50 countries testified.
“The State of Israel has the obligation to end its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as soon as possible,” Salam added.
The judge reiterated that “Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem continue in violation of international law.”
The ICJ considered the case after the UN General Assembly issued a resolution in December 2022 requesting “its advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.”
Following the ruling of the International Court of Justice, Benjamin Netanyahu opposed this position, saying that “the Jewish people are not conquerors in their own land.”
“No false decision in The Hague will distort this historical truth, just as the legality of Israeli settlements in all the territories of our land cannot be questioned,” the Israeli leader said.
