From Italian Roots to Banfield and the Seminary

Born Piero Antonio Franco De Benedictis in Galípoli, Italy, on April 19, 1945, he arrived in Argentina as a toddler. The family settled initially in Banfield. His early life took an unexpected turn when, at age 11, he entered a seminary in Viedma—mistaking it for a standard school rather than a training ground for priests.

Over the course of more than five decades, he recorded and shared stages with foundational figures of Argentine music, including Mercedes Sosa and León Gieco. His extensive filmography includes appearances in Raúl Perrone’s short film Bang Bang (1990), alongside titles such as Heroína (1972) and Mercedes Sosa, como un pájaro libre (1983).

Although he eventually left the path to the priesthood in late 1963, those formative years cemented his deep sense of social commitment. He made his television debut on January 6, 1964, singing Italian tunes before teaming up with writer José Tcherkaski to shape the landscape of Argentine popular song.

Creating the Masterpiece Mi Viejo and International Acclaim

In 1969, the creative partnership yielded Mi Viejo, a tender yet stark reflection on aging fatherhood that became an international standard. When Piero first sang the completed track to his own father, he saw him cry.

The song went on to inspire more than 400 recorded versions across multiple languages, appear in roughly 40 series and films—including episodes of The Simpsons and a biographical series about Diego Maradona—and generate royalties across 35 countries. Momentum built further in 1970 when Piero and Tcherkaski represented Argentina at the prestigious International Song Festival of Rio de Janeiro in front of 30,000 people with the track “Pedro Nadie”.

Piero Flees into Exile After Political Repression

As the political climate in Argentina darkened during the 1970s, Piero shifted away from traditional ballads toward direct social critique.

Following an attempted kidnapping and the destruction of his master recording plates, Piero fled into exile, spending four years in Spain and one year in Colombia.

A Lasting Cultural Legacy Across Generations

Survived by his son Juan de Benedictis—himself a musician—and grandchildren including Ámbar de Benedictis, Piero leaves behind a recorded history that bridges decades of turbulence and artistic triumph. His legacy is defined by creative independence, pacifism, and deep resonance within the popular memory of Argentina and the wider Spanish-speaking world.
